At the Core of Why We Help

Nearly four years after its launch, Uplift’s purpose is more important than ever before. With growing numbers of women and children facing a multitude of crises across our country, the need to provide aid and security is a constant. It’s our mission to invest in women facing these adversities, because when one woman’s life changes for the better, she can help uplift the community around her.

Women and children in the United States disproportionately experience crises and poverty. These numbers are even more dire among minority populations. Their challenges, such as food insecurity, lack of healthcare, and childcare affordability are often interconnected issues that create a cycle that’s difficult to break. Uplift believes these issues must be addressed and the systems that put these challenges in place have to change. Our ability to help just one family in crisis can have a serious impact on an entire community.

Food insecurity, for example, is far too familiar an issue for many low- income families in our country. Experiencing the lack of proper nutrition for a prolonged amount of time can lead to serious physical and mental health concerns, especially for a young family. According to the American Medical Women’s Association, houses led by single-moms experience a 30.2% higher risk of living in food insecurity. This is often caused by issues relating to gender inequality, socioeconomic instability, and limited access to good food for a family. The ability to feed your family should never feel like a sacrifice.

Another issue that many women in poverty are forced to face is the childcare crisis affecting millions of mothers across the country. The unaffordable costs and inadequate access to safe child care is forcing many hard-working, single mothers to leave their jobs. The Center for American Progress says the high costs of childcare services led to about a 13% decline in the employment rate for mothers with children age 5 and younger. Better access to primary schools and daycares would increase the opportunities for women in poverty to provide for their families. But continued federal cuts for programs dedicated to expanding this kind of access are a severe threat to women and children facing poverty.

It’s because of issues like these, Uplift continues to work toward supporting the needs of everyday women who often don’t have a choice but to face these difficult challenges. With 90% of our applicants being single mothers we hear about these exact challenges and how they impact families every single day. Whether it's one of those single mothers requesting some extra money to provide groceries for her family, or a grant recipient trying to pay for a month’s expenses at daycare, our judgement-free funds are dedicated for these exact expenses.

Women and children should never be forced to make such challenging decisions in order to provide for their families. With the help of donors like you, Uplift can limit these unnecessary expenses and aid the everyday issues for women and children across our country.

Change can start with just one donation. It's crucial that we all contribute when these crises affect so many around us. Help us in continuing to support these families at https://www.upliftingwomen.org/donate.
