A Solid Foundation: From Abuse to Assurance

As Uplift celebrates the public launch of our funding application, we also are aware that the real work of our organization begins now. Up to this point, we have been dreaming and making plans about meeting the needs of women and children who are in crisis. Now, we are putting our mission into practice.

Our first grant recipient was in a heartbreaking situation. She found herself in an abusive marriage, where her husband was traumatizing her and her young son.

“My husband has been extremely abusive to myself and my son,” she shared. “I have been planning our escape for months, I just didn’t act fast enough.”

This woman and her son had fled to a friend’s home and were working with a social worker to create a safe plan forward, away from their abuser. Unfortunately, when she was on her way to pick up her son from school and head to a crisis center to seek safety, her husband had a restraining order served against her and due to the specifics of the restraining order, she is not allowed to go home. This left her without access to her son, medication, money, or her vehicle.

Meanwhile, her abuser is withholding all contact between her and her son, who has not been back to school.

“I know my son is terrified, because I am his safe person,” she shared. “[This grant] will assist me in not only moving out of the crisis center, but it would also assist us in freeing ourselves from abuse, control, love-bombing, sexual, emotional, and mental abuse, and trauma. It will provide us a solid foundation to build on. It would open the door to starting a new life filled with healing, stability, safety, assurance, and love.”

A core value of Uplift is the idea that when women are for one another, worlds change. We are so hopeful that for this woman, a grant from Uplift will help change her world from the landscape of abuse that she and her child have been surviving, to an environment of healing and hope.

This situation is heartbreaking, but we feel so privileged that we were able to provide a moment of uplift in the midst of trauma and insecurity.

This woman received help because of the generous gifts and donations of Uplift’s supporters. Right now, we are in the middle of a campaign—our goal is to raise $9,100 before the end of September.

Would you consider donating to help us continue to offer support within reach for women and children in crisis? All donations will be given directly to women, like this grant recipient, who with direct financial assistance can change the trajectory of their story.
